Fear of Driving
Fear of driving, do you suffer from it? Do you know a victim of fear of driving? When you get into a vehicle are you nervous? If so you may have a fear of driving and just FYI the experts call this condition Hodophobia. Great now that you have the two dollar word for you condition what can you do about it? Well, the good news is that fear of driving is considered by doctors to be a learned behavior and is very treatable.
Maybe you are ok if you are driving and in control of the car. This most likely will take place on roads with witch you are very familiar, for instance in the neighborhood. Fear of driving will however return if they leave that comfort zone. The fear you feel, or experience, is that being in unfamiliar territory will cause you to lose control. Control is the factor the keeps away you fear of driving and losing of this can cause your unreasonable fear of driving to become a self fulfilling prophecy.
You may find yourself simply petrified with fear at the thought of being in a car. It may not matter weather you are in control of the vehicle, or being driven by another, you just can’t shake the fear of driving. You may have had some traumatic experience while you were driving or you may be the victim of the fear of the others on the road…they may lose control.
Its easy to list the fears that contribute to your fear of driving such as, night driving, fog, snow, being in traffic, driving in any bad weather, passing trucks or other large vehicles, going through tunnels, driving down narrow lanes…! The list goes on but the important thing to remember is that your fear of driving condition can be cured. It is completely treatable! The truth is that it’s up to you to do something about it.
